Last month, we responded to the house fire featured on the cover of Firehouse Magazine. It is an honor and a privilege to be featured on one of the leading sources of training and education information within the fire service community.
This publication is a great source of ideas and shared experiences that connects us to the latest tactics and helps us prepare for the daily challenges we face. We're thrilled to be part of this training community and appreciative of the opportunity to be featured in this magazine. FDNY FoundationOn Wednesday, January 30, the children of FDNY Firefighter Keith Young joined Shark Tank's Mark Cuban, Lori Greiner, Matt Higgins, Daymond John, and Kevin O'Leary, at FDNY Headquarters in Brooklyn to present the proceeds from the Cup Board Pro to the FDNY Foundation, FDNY Bureau of Health Services, FDNY Family Assistance Unit, and the FDNY Fire Family Transport Foundation.
Cup Board Pro is the invention of FDNY Firefighter Keith Young, who put the production of his product on hold in 2011 to support his wife, Beth King, through her fight with breast cancer. She passed away in August of 2012, and in 2015, Firefighter Young was diagnosed with cancer related to his role in the rescue and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center. He succumbed to his illness on March 17, 2018. Keith and Beth’s children – Kaley, Christian, and Keira – fulfilled their dad’s dream by presenting the Cup Board Pro to the Shark Tank judges in an episode that aired this past October. All five sharks came together to offer $100,000 for a 20 percent stake in the Cup Board Pro business, and the children pledged that all profits will be donated to charities supporting Firefighters affected by World Trade Center cancer. Thank you to the Young family for supporting our Fired Up for a Cure initiative, which has led the efforts to permanently support cancer awareness, prevention and research for uniformed first responders, civilian members of the Department and their families diagnosed with cancer.
Thank you Shark Tank, Mark Cuban, Lori Greiner Matt Higgins, Daymond John and Kevin O'Leary for all your support and generosity. We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Firefighter Steven H. Pollard’s family and friends, as well as his brothers and sisters in the FDNY. May he rest in peace. It is with deep regret that Mayor Bill de Blasio and FDNY Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro announce the death of Probationary Firefighter Steven H.
Pollard.Commissioner Nigro said, 'It's an incredibly sad night for the Pollard family, for the Fire Department family, and for our city. Firefighter Pollard had one and a half years on the job, just starting out. He lost his life tonight in the process of helping others. He was assigned to Ladder Company 170 in Brooklyn. At approximately 10 p.m. They were called to the Belt Parkway just east of Flatbush, to a 2-car accident with injuries. As they were going to help the victims at that accident, Firefighter Pollard slipped through a gap in the roadway and fell to the ground approximately 52 feet below.
He was pronounced this evening. It's a terrible loss for the Department, to lose a member just at the beginning of his career like this is devastating to us. He is the 1,151st member of the Bravest to give his life in the service of the people of this city. As his family mourns him, the Department mourns him, and certainly the citizens of our city mourn him. All we can do as a Department is stand beside the family and give them whatever support we can, stand beside the members of his unit at this difficult time for them, and ask for the prayers of everyone in this city for the Pollard family, for his father, retired Firefighter Ray Pollard, his brother Ray Jr., and for their mom and the rest of their extended family for this terrible loss.' Mayor de Blasio said, 'This is a family who has done so much for New York City and now they're going through this loss and this pain.
